Satchell et al vs FedEx Express

This case was filed in U.S. District Court for Northern California in 2003.  The class of plaintiffs allege that the FedEx Express Western Region discriminates against hourly employees and certain managers due to race and ethnicity in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.  The class of plaintiffs allege that FedEx Express Western Region discriminates against African American and Latino hourly workers and certain managers by disproportionately failing to put black and latino workers on promotion tracks, providing less compensation for similar work and discriminately disciplining minority workers.  Two separate classes - for hourly employees and for certain managers - were certified by the court in September 2005.  See www.racecaseagainstfedex.com for more information.

In April 2007, the workers' lawyers and FedEx Express announced a settlement to the charges in this lawsuit.  The company agreed to pay nearly $55 million as part of the settlement.  More important to the settlement are the policy ch FedEx Express has agreed to make: getting rid of the basic skills test, fair access to training and promotion, documenting the guaranteed fair treatment process.  The full agreement on policy changes are in the Consent Decree (warning: 58 page pdf document) and the Consent Decree Appendixes (warning: 54 page pdf document.)
